The mauler is a Hammer Head on Stroids! With the extra armor slot, extra special slot, and built in enhancements such as Mortar and Penetrating bonuses - Zowee! That's going to be a hull that will see a lot of use! And on Tier 4 of the Monthly Raid, it is actually accessible for many mid level players. I know 'cause I got one, making it to Tier 4 for the first time.

There are a lot of potential uses for this hull. It will make a great scavenger for blueprints - Where you can do it with Assault Missiles, SFB3 and Laser3 PLUS Hull Streamlining so you can actually get between Drac Cargo Fleets without taking all evening! Nice, very very nice.

You can set one up for doing Events and as a Base Hitter - use Siege Morts on one fleet, Siege Missiles on a second and you can start retaliating on some of those higher levels that have been making your life a constant repair button. Plus you could build an Escort Mauler using the new Countermeasures special to go along with your base hitter or event fleets. It would provide some amped up ... err ... enhanced coverage.

And for Base Defense, a much better choice than the HHa that has been my mainstay for some time. Mine will be building shortly! Below are some ideas to start with, but tweak them to your satisfaction, change out armor, specials, or whatever to fit your personal needs and vision!

The Auto-Salvage fleet does not really need armor. I was adapting from a different fleet build and did not remove it. If I had armor, it would be Map enhancing D2-N or D3/D4 versions of the same.

Grats on tier 4 !!
I m very happy for you since this hull is the best stepping stone in the game imo

Your first build is a gamble. Nobody really knows how well this special will perform.
And there are 2 specials that comes in conflict too...
The engine upgrade reduces the accuracy where the new special increases it.
If I was to build a dedicated hail-phalanx boat, I would either get rid of the motor or use a strike system wich have no accuracy penality
(and tbh i would chose a hull that have more weapon slots than 6)

Second build is fine for its purpuse
a fleet like this is very useful for copmpleting Blueprints from salvage

The third build is not good at all imo though...
It is way too heavy for a start
usually a siege mortar fleet has 8 mortar divided on 4 ships
Target weight is a max of 6886 tons.
It doesn t have enough missile resist to stand halos for long and doesn t have enough hails to stand 6 VM with SL3

In the whole process of ship designing you have to immagine the base you wanna come up against..
You have to max out your defense against the type of dammage thats gonna ht the hardest and fill with resist from the 2nd highest type of dammage
The fleet will have a weakness in the end but will be much tougher against the type of base you are aiming for.

Also, Siege Mortar-S is Much Much stronger than than the other 2 variants

So my build would look like this
2X Siege mortar S
2X Hail-B

Heavy Explosive shell 3
Guidance Scrambler 3
Alloy Armor M-C 3

Filled With the biggest M armor possible to fit.. aim for 10 000 without busting the weight limit
1X D4-M
3X D3-M (Not sureif it s been released yet ?!?! ) (... but damn would it fit nicely)

There is also the possibility to build a Siege missile variant with the Mauler

2X Siege Missile (F>V>A>E)
2X strike missile L
2X Hail-B

Alloy Armor MC
Speed System3
SBF3

3X D4-M
1X D1-M

... or you could play around a bit with it ...
Reactive Armor 3
Strike System 3
Enhanced Warheads 2

.. or you know whatever gives you speed missile defense and missile range..

Edit :
Engine 3
SBF 3
and RA3 could be a start... ?!

Justgreen, I hear you about the penalty for the Eng3 special. I would go Strike System 3 if I had it, but Tier 3 on the weekly missions has evaded me. I hope to be able to do it very soon. I can do Level 31 Drac Outposts pretty easily now, taking out the Guard Fleet with SW Cut3/SFB3 fleet for 1 to 3 minutes damage and then the buildings with IR SW Thud4/CS3 fleet that take 30 in repair time, but with my new Battlecruisers I think I can get sub 20 minutes repair. The problem is takes about two zillion Lvl 31 Outposts to get Tier 3 on the weekly.

I had hopes of upgrading my Stalkers to handle the Level 37 Outpost guard fleet, then either the Battlecruisers or HHa missile fleet to do the buildings. Now it will be Mauler and HHa. I have 4 HH and 1 HHa already built, they were waiting for a couple of blueprints to be refitted. Now I'm in limbo about where to proceed. I want to start the Mauler right away, but it will eat 8 days minimum of dock time ... plus however many 8 hour penalties from being attackers that get through. I'm tempted to refit 3 of HH and use them for the upcoming events, then let the Mauler builds get started. Always too many hulls to build and way too little time.

Darwin, I am looking at something very similar to your design but instead I'll do

2x Siege Missiles D55-A (all I have at the moment)
2x Phalanx 2
2x Hail B

Missile Sys3, Countermeasures 3, RA3

4x D1-M armor (for the stray missile that gets through.

I had intended to use ENG3, but if they are primarily going against stationary targets - not really needed. A battle during events has twice as long as FvF battles between players, so no real reason to have Eng3 ... except if you are racing to get that outpost before a neighbor grabs it ... heh heh! :P

I actually like the build to take out outpost from weekly events...
If you d use another fleet to kill the guard fleet in the outpost, you would no longer need hails... so you could replace them with 2 more phalanx 2 haha ...
I d love to see that on the sea ..

By sacrificing a mortar, you can add...

1more ship in the mix
more armor per boat
more defense

by swapping the new tech thing (wich is useless with assault mortar) (the new special increase dmg only against building where assault mortar deals tiny damage to buildings)
you get a nice speed and turn speed.

Even compound could be swapped for something like alloy armor MC.. or even reactive armor...

My mauler build works well on weekly missions and raids. Normally use a bc as flag ship with high evade then that takes all the damage.
